❃ Smilodon was a large felid that lived during the Pleistocene epoch, 1.6 million to 10,000 years ago. Smilodon is one of the most famous prehistoric animals, and has been featured in countless books, films, and television shows.
❃ It was a heavily built cat, with a muscular body and large bones. It had a short fur that was brown or reddish in color, with black spots. The front legs were shorter than the hind legs, and the forefeet had sharp claws that were up to 10 cm (4 in) long. The head was large and blocky, with a short snout and large teeth.
❃ Smilodon was about the same size as a modern tiger, but it was more robust, with a heavier build. Males weighed up to 360 kg (800 lb), and females up to 220 kg (490 lb). The largest known specimen, found in Brazil, was estimated to weigh 495 kg (1,090 lb). We'll cut it off right there. If you want to know more about the saber-tooth, make sure to see our Smilodon blog!
