❃ Tiktaalik lived during the Late Devonian period, about 375–359 million years ago. It is notable for being one of the first known tetrapods, or four-legged vertebrates. The name "Tiktaalik" comes from the Inuktitut word tiktaalik, meaning "large freshwater fish".
❃ They had many features which were intermediate between fish and tetrapods. It was approximately 9 feet (2.7 m) long, with a neck and head that could swivel and lift itself above the water's surface to look for prey. It also had limbs tipped with webbing and sharp claws, which may have help it catch fish or climb out of the water onto land.
❃ Fossils of Tiktaalik have been found in sedimentary rocks in Canada's Nunavut Territory, as well as in parts of the United States. This animal provides an important link in the evolution of fish into tetrapods. It is thought that Tiktaalik may have been one of the first animals to venture onto land, although it probably still spent most of its time in water.
